Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction is transformative, but it is not the right choice for everyone. A thorough consultation with your optometrist is necessary to determine your eligibility and to have an honest discussion about the results you can expect.

During this assessment, we evaluate several key factors to see if your eyes are ready for the procedure, including:

  • Eye health: You should be free of eye diseases and have adequate corneal thickness.
  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Stable Refractive Error: Your prescription should be stable for at least one year.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure used to permanently reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors. By changing the shape of the cornea, the laser allows light entering the eye to focus more accurately on the retina, resulting in clearer vision.

The cornea plays a vital role in your vision by acting as the eye’s outermost lens. It is responsible for a large portion of the eye’s total focusing power. If the curve of the cornea is too steep or too flat, you may experience vision errors like nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). Reshaping this surface helps the eye process light more effectively.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most common vision correction surgery.

During the procedure, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea, and a laser is used to reshape the tissue below. Then, the flap is placed back.

LASIK is popular because of its relatively quick recovery time and its ability to address a wide range of prescriptions.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the first type of laser eye surgery used for vision correction and remains a trusted option today. Unlike LASIK, no flap is created; instead, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed before the laser reshapes the tissue.

This makes it a suitable alternative for patients with thinner corneas. The recovery time for PRK is slightly longer than for LASIK.

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a newer, minimally invasive procedure used primarily to correct nearsightedness.

Instead of creating a flap or removing the surface layer, a laser creates a small, disc-shaped piece of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny incision. This method often results in less disruption to the corneal surface.

The Importance of a Consultation Before Laser Eye Surgery

A consultation is a vital first step in considering laser eye surgery. This meeting allows for a detailed doctor-patient discussion regarding what you can realistically expect from the surgery, including the specifics of the healing process and the results you can expect.

We take the time to understand your daily activities to determine if the surgery will help you achieve your specific vision goals. This is important, as each person’s eyes are unique, so generic information about the procedure cannot tell you the personalized information you’ll receive during the consultation.

If you are a candidate, our optometrist will provide a referral to a trusted local eye surgeon and will remain a key part of your care team to assist with your recovery and follow-up appointments after the procedure.
